Hebrews 2:4 – Part 4 – Gift of the Holy Ghost

Hebrews 2:4 – Part 4

Gift of the Holy Ghost

God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? (Hebrews 2:4)

On the day of Pentecost God manifested Himself as the Holy Ghost. He made Himself known by a mighty rushing wind, and as cloven tongues of fire sat upon them all. This was God giving the gift that the Lord Jesus promised His disciples.

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (John 14:16)

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (John 14:17)

In the Old Testament God had manifested Himself in many different ways; but at the end of Old Testament history there was a long silence, but then as a bolt of lightning and a clap of thunder, God was manifested in the flesh as the Son of God. The heavens were opened to proclaim the glory of God in the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was given to be the sacrifice for sin so that we, the sinners of this world, could be set free from the bondage of sin and death by Him. The Lord Jesus fulfilled the Father’s will in all that the Father gave Him to do. He was not only the Son most precious, but in His Sonship to His Father He was the faithful servant of Jehovah. He finished the work of eternity for us in His death upon the cross; His resurrection was the proof of His work of redemption, and the proof of eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

He ascended to glory, He is sat down at the right hand of God; but before His finished work He promised a Comforter, one who would lead us into all truth. This came on the day of Pentecost when God the Holy Spirit manifested Himself to fulfill the promise that the Lord Jesus had made to His disciples. Because of the heart of man, man always desires that which he can control. That is why ungodly men who profess God desire gifts that manifest their own pride and vanity. They desire to talk about gifts that they have, but not the gift of God, the gift of His own Spirit to dwell within man. The significance of the gift of the Holy Ghost was a one time gift or manifestation of the Spirit of God on the day of Pentecost.

As the birth of the Son of God was a one time gift, as His death was a one time gift, as His resurrection was a one time gift, the gift of the Holy Ghost was given once, a one time gift. This gift was a two-fold gift, it was the beginning of Church history, and it was the Spirit sent down to indwell men who would be the new born babes in Jesus Christ. He would dwell in the Church until the Church is removed by it’s translation. While the Church is on earth, the Holy Spirit will guide the children of God. He, the Spirit of God, will be the unifying force and energy of the Church in Jesus Christ. He came as a wind, one could feel but not see Him. He came and displayed cloven tongues of fire showing that one of the aspects of His presence in the world was to reprove the world of sin.

From Pentecost to the end of the Church Age the Spirit of God has come to indwell the sons of God. His presence is within them, and He will continually dwell within them for eternity; however, His presence on earth is only for the duration of the Church. When the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ is translated the Spirit of God will also leave the earth to it’s own madness

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. (1 Thessalonians 4:13)

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.. (1 Thessalonians 4:14)

For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. (1 Thessalonians 4:15)

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: (1 Thessalonians 4:16)

Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 4:17)

Wherefore comfort one another with these words. (1 Thessalonians 4:18)

There is a chain of history for the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Each and every link of this chain is one soul saved from the fires of hell. These links are joined by the Spirit of God, each link that God redeems draws us closer to the end of Church history. It is neither time nor space that determines the end of Church history; it is the fullness of the Body of Christ when the last precious soul or link is brought in to complete the chain of history. There will be outward signs when this end is approaching. Both the Lord and the Apostles gave us many signs of this time. I will give you only three. First, as in Genesis 11 the world will be of one language. This has already been accomplished, we have the internet reaching the uttermost parts of this world. The computer language that is used is standard all over the world. It is the same language in the United States as it is in Russia, or China, or any other nations of the world. Secondly, the world will become a place of mingling and confusion, race with race, man with man, woman with woman, all judged in Genesis 6:1-6 . . .

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, (Genesis 6:1)

That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.(Genesis 6:2)

And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. (Genesis 6:3)

There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. (Genesis 6:4)

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (Genesis 6:5)

And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. (Genesis 6:6)

. . . and condemned by the Lord Jesus when He referred that the end would be as in the days of Noah.

But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. (Matthew 24:36)

But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (Matthew 24:37)

For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, (Matthew 24:38)

And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (Matthew 24:39)

The third sign takes us back into the days of the Kings of Israel and Judah. They were offering their children to the fire god Moloch for temporal blessings. God condemned this activity and sent them into captivity where they would dwell in Babylon. Today we have the Nazi ovens of fire in the United States and within the whole world. They are murdering precious souls in the sanitized rooms of the abortion clinics (ovens). This is taking place all over the world. They are offering their children out of their wombs, taking their lives so that they can continue in a productive and lascivious life. These three things that I have just mentioned have brought judgment in the past history of man, why would it not lead to judgment once again? God has not changed, when these three evils reach the fullness of the sin of the Gentiles, and the stink becomes so great in the nostrils of God, He will remove His children from this earth. The Holy Ghost will also be removed, and the earth will fall into a time of evil like never before or ever imagined.

For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. (2 Thessalonians 2:7)

And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: (2 Thessalonians 2:8) Also read the entire 2nd chapter of 2nd Thessalonians.

At this time the man of sin will be revealed, He will oppose all that is of God. As Hitler slaughtered the Jews and Christians in Nazi Germany, this wicked man will seek out any person or any thing that is of God to destroy them; any materials that tells of God and Jesus Christ will be destroyed. I’m sure that God will preserve some in remote corners for His witness against the world. In the days of Adolph Hitler they had great book burnings, they wanted to remove anything that spoke of the old world, or of anything that was in opposition to the thoughts and indoctrinations of the ruling regime, or that any moral character in them. Does not this sound familiar for even today the attack is against morality, and especially the righteousness of God in Jesus Christ, and those who hold that righteousness in their hearts.

This man of evil will be the fulfillment of Adam’s posterity, the sin and sin dna (we can also called this epigenetic inheritance) that Adam brought into the world will be at the highest point or peak and this man of evil will be energized by the Devil. When his kingdom is at it’s highest point of evil and the sin of the Gentiles is complete then the Lord will be revealed from heaven at His 2nd coming to earth. The Lord will destroy all His enemies as a bolt of light or lightening coming from the east. Remember that the Church has already be caught up to be with the Lord because the Church or Body of Christ is a heavenly dwelling people. We are not of this earth, and our blessings are above where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God. As the Holy Ghost was given for the Church, He will be taken up with the Church or the sons of God in the great translation of the saints. As Paul declared the dead in Christ shall be raised first, and as they are being raised, we who are alive will be caught up with them to meet the Lord in the air. At this time meeting the Lord in the air, He will sweep us off to Himself into heaven for all eternity. Later, when the Lord Jesus sets up His kingdom on earth, we will have some communion with the earth; however, we were never meant to be earthly people. God always purposed in His heart that we would be a heavenly people to show forth His praise and the glory of His Son, Jesus Christ. I seem to have drifted, so let’s return to the gift of the Holy Ghost . . . .

Just as the Lord Jesus has many names, such as Jesus Christ, Lord, Master, or Rabboni, Jesus of Nazareth, Son of God, and son of man; so also the Spirit of God has a few names. These are 3: the Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit of God. These three names add to the ‘we’ of John, chapter 3, verses 11,12, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. (John 3:11) If I have told you  earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? (John 3:12)

It is always the work of the Godhead bodily, the work of the Father, the work of the Son, and the work of the Holy Ghost — this is the fullness of God. The Bible declares God is Spirit, and through this revelation to us He begins with the work of the Spirit in Genesis 1, In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Genesis 1:1) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. (Genesis 1:2) As He hovered over the face of the deep, over the darkness, and moved over the face of the waters, now He hovers over the world and in the hearts of the children of God. He is here to lead the Church, and to comfort those in Christ, and to lead God’s children into all truth; this is taking place in this present evil world. He is working as God the Spirit, and in God the Spirit we have the Spirit of truth, which is one of the divine qualities of the Holy Spirit. The Lord Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6) The Holy Spirit manifests these three qualities when He magnifies the Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ.

He also has a mission in the world at large. As the Son of God rebuked the world of sin, so now also the Holy Spirit rebukes and reproves the world of it’s sin.

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: (John 16:8)

Of sin, because they believe not on me; (John 16:9)

Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; (John 16:10)

Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. (John 16:11)

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. (John 16:12)

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. (John 16:13)

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. (John 16:14)

The Spirit of God has been sent by the Son of God to shepherd and instruct the Lord’s sheep in the word of God. Through His presence He is revealing the majesty of the Son of God. He is the spirit of truth, He is magnifying the Son of God, and those who love the Lord Jesus are filled by the Spirit of all the wonders of Christ. The Spirit of God cares for us and ministers to us in words we cannot hear; yet, we feel His presence. Although He is invisible, He is tangible in our hearts and in our souls. In verse 9 of chapter 16 of John, the Spirit of God is to reprove the world of sin because they believe not on the Lord Jesus Christ because the sinless One is the standard for the world in His sinlessness. He has condemned the world for it’s sin, the Spirit of God now takes the part of Christ and magnifies it amongst men to condemn their sins. In verse 10 the Spirit reproves the world of righteousness for they have rejected the righteous One. The world has cast out the Prince of Life out of this world because of their unbelief, and in verse 11, He is judgment because the Devil is judged. The work of the cross has destroyed the works of the Devil. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; (Hebrews 2:14) The glorious sacrifice of the Son of God has put the wicked one out of the way and destroyed him who had the power of death over us, and Christ has infused His righteousness, and His life into us forever, even eternal life; therefore we, the sons of God, have received the divine gift of the Holy Ghost.

Pentecost was the gift of the Spirit of God to fill us with all the fullness of God. He guides us, and nurtures us, He comforts us, and He leads us like Eliezer, the servant of Abraham. (Genesis 15:2; 24:1-67) There will come a time when the Church is complete, but this wonderful gift of the Spirit of God, God the Holy Spirit will present to the Son of God the finished and complete work of the Church most precious. He will present a Church to the Lord Jesus having neither spot nor wrinkle, a precious jewel of eternity to Him who upholdeth all things by the word of His power, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Turn with me to Acts, chapter 10, read the whole chapter. In it you will see that Peter received the vision from God to go to the Gentiles. Peter was hesitant, so God in this vision places unclean meat on a sheet as Peter resists. God tells Peter, by the Spirit of God, what God has cleansed, that call not common, or unclean. Peter is persuaded to go to the Gentiles, we have another manifestation of the Spirit of God; but this is not a new work, or a new giving of the Spirit of God, it is the continuation of His work on earth.

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. (Acts 10:44)

And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 10:45)

Note it is the gift of the Holy Ghost, not the gifts of the Holy Ghost. Turn to Acts, chapter 11, verse 15, once again, it is the gift of the Holy Spirit not the gifts given to men. And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. (Acts 11:15)

There is a difference between the gift of the Holy Spirit as a Person in the Godhead, and the gifts to man by the Holy Spirit. These gifts of the Holy Spirit only come by the will of God. God is no respecter of persons, and it is according to His divine will that men receive His gifts. Many men try to imitate them, yet do not possess the true gift, in fact, if their heart is at that state not only are the gifts absent but the Spirit of God does not dwell in their hearts.

Wisdom and Knowledge

The true servant of Christ will be determined by the first 2 gifts mentioned by Paul in 1st Corinthian 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; These two gifts are the most important of all the gifts to the servant of God, the first being wisdom, and the second being knowledge. For Christ is made unto us both wisdom and knowledge; the servant of God cannot be without these two gifts, it is the working in the heart by the Spirit of God in the servant of God. We receive righteousness in the Person of Christ, for He is made unto us righteousness, and we stand only in His righteousness for we have none of our own.

There are many things in this world that would distract the child of God, even the servant of God stumbles in this world of stone and crevices. The Spirit of God is there, nevertheless, to overcome, and lead us through what ever failures we may have had. Once again, I will repeat, we have no righteousness of our own. Our righteousness is solely in the righteousness of Christ. There are false prophets and sorcerers who have not the righteousness of Christ. They try to resist the divine works of the Holy Spirit. In the New Testament in Acts, such was Elymas, the false prophet and sorcerer. This man tried to resist the work of the Spirit of God in a true servant of God.

So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. (Acts 13:4)

And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. (Acts 13:5)

And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus: (Acts 13:6)

Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God. (Acts 13:7)

But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith. (Acts 13:8)

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him, (Acts 13:9)

And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? (Acts 13:10)

And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. (Acts 13:11)

He tried to hinder the work of grace in another man. This was a vile action of Elymas, but the dye was cast, Paul was filled with the Holy Ghost so he set or fastened his eyes on Elymas and spoke the judgment against Elymas. Because darkness and blindness was the true condition of this sorcerer’s heart and soul, therefore, blindness covered this sorcerer as a mist of darkness. Paul gave him no quarter, but called him a child of the Devil in verse 10.

We need to speak about this division; the children of God, or sons of God, versus the children of the Devil. To get our attention, as a teacher at the chalk board, I will say to the class, ‘Wake up, wake up, those who slumber,’ we have a reality before us every day in our sojourn upon this earth, When was the last time you were told that you live in a present evil world, when were you told that there are two groups of humanity in this world? This has nothing to do with stature or race, or abilities, or education, or nationality. We have the division of the children of God and the children of the Devil. There is no middle ground. The children of God have been created in Jesus Christ, and the children of the Devil follow the Devil’s works. They follow the evil one both ignorantly through his deception, and purposely following and acting out his various deceptions. The statement that the Lord Jesus made to the Pharisees, which I will add were the religious leaders of that day, they were of their father, the Devil. Things have not changed. There is still this same division in the world. The Lord Jesus made it clear that if we were to uphold His name, and His truth, and His life, as the world hated Him — the children of the Devil will hate us also. Elymas hated the works that Paul was doing. A man was about to be converted to Christ, and Elymas a man revered by men as a sorcerer was opposed to the work of the Spirit of God. And for his opposition against God, and for resisting the Holy Spirit of God Elymas received the just reward in judgment by God.

Now let’s consider Simon the sorcerer, But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: (Acts 8:9)

The gift of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit can not be bought nor appointed by man,

And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, (Acts 8:18)

Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. (Acts 8:19)

But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. (Acts 8:20)

Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. (Acts 8:21)

Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. (Acts 8:22)

For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. (Acts 8:23)

Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. (Acts 8:24)

Simon’s actions should be a lesson to those who covert and claim gifts of the Holy Spirit when there is no truth or Spirit in them; for they know not the God of salvation.

I refer to a scene that is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 7. We have the Lord Jesus judging those of the unrepentant world, they tell the Lord Jesus of all the wonderful things that they have done in His name. He turns to them and says, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (Matthew 7:23)

What was lacking in them? It was the indwelling of the Spirit of God, the 3rd Person of the Godhead. This was also lacking in Simon the sorcerer, he tried to buy the gifts of the Holy Spirit when that was impossible. They are given according to the will of God. When Simon sees his folly he was as Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1, beyond all hope. Simon was judged for attempting to buy the Holy Spirit, and Ananias and Sapphira were judged for lying to God, the Holy Spirit.

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? (Acts 5:3)

Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. (Acts 5:4)

Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. (Acts 5:9)

Back to Simon . . . he first made a false profession, and then he tried to buy the Spirit of God. In certain cultures and religions they make merchandise of the Spirit of God. My wife remembers when she was young that while residing in Fall River, Massachusetts that the Roman religion would sell the Holy Spirit to the highest bidder for a year. The church would bring a statue (covered with a white cloth) of the invisible Holy Spirit to be displayed in the bidder’s home. Whenever the bidder had company the visitors were required to leave a monetary gift in front of the statue of the invisible Spirit of God. What blaspheme! We are talking about the Holy Spirit of God . . . who has been given to the Church, who was given to guide and direct the Church, not to be made merchandise for the devilish heart of man. If man would do that to the Spirit of the Almighty God, what would he do to us who are indwelt by God’s Spirit. There are two sins in Scripture that man cannot escape from. The first is trampling under foot the blood of Christ. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:29) The second sin is doing despite or dishonor to the Spirit of God. Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. (Matthew 12:31) And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. (Matthew 12:32)

Both the Apostles and the Lord Jesus declared that this was a sin unto death, and was, and is unpardonable. I often think of Esau who sought repentance with tears in his eyes; however, he did not face his true condition before God and thus, the repentance was for naught. The following quote is recorded in Scripture what God thought about Esau. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. (Romans 9:13) (Malachi 1:2-3) Those who refuse the Holy Spirit of God are without God and without Christ in this world for such are without hope.

Anyone who reads the Bible, and studies both the prophetic value, and the moral value can see that we are in the last, last, last days of Church history. The mingling of the world of Satan in his false professors and his ministers of unrighteousness have mingled in world commerce in the political realm, in the educational realm, and in the media. Man in our present age has developed a sadistic form of righteousness; this, of course, is the long stream of self-righteousness that goes all the way back to Cain. This is not new, but it has taken on a new shape for in this new self-righteousness one does not have to be moral, or have any morals. The new ‘having personal values’ is the old ‘without morals.’ They are free to sin in their self-righteousness. What hypocrisy! When the Devil looks upon these delusional members of his family he has a big smile on his face. Don’t be fooled by the multitudes of professions for Christ. For the truth in Jesus Christ has never been for the majority, or in the majority. A politician can request that the 10 commandments be taken down, and then when tragedy strikes we see him attending the church of his choice in all hypocrisy. This is part of the deceptive work of this world. Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (2 Timothy 3:5)

There is only one defense for the child of God in this present evil world. Come aside, find a quiet place, open the word of God, pray over the word of God, and ask the Lord to minister to your heart by the Spirit of God. He has been given as a gift to us. We should avail ourselves of not only His presence, but also His help in keeping us and preserving us until the day of Christ.

As we have been examining the actual gift of the Holy Ghost sent down from above by Jesus Christ, we must remember that as the Lord Jesus desires our worship, that our worship must go through the Person of the Holy Ghost. Many times I have seen signs with these words, ‘Come Worship With Us,’ the ignorance of such a sign inferring that the world can worship with the children of God is pure delusion. For only those who are born of God, and not the will of the flesh, nor the will of man can worship God. For neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem will the true worshipers of God worship. They will worship God in Spirit and in truth. (The Gospel of John, chapter 4) The gift of the Holy Spirit was given to present us a finished Church, a holy Church, a righteous Church, a Church born of grace to the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. I will not endeavor, at this time, to examine the particular gifts of the Holy Spirit of God for that would demand a book and not a paper. And if you can understand, I will confess, my heart and soul is not ready yet. Hopefully, one day, the Spirit of God will move me to embark on such a journey, but for right now we must remember that the Holy Ghost was the gift to the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ or Body of Christ as a gift from our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
